Soil Management

A healthy garden means healthy, “living” soil. We actively manage and care for both the seen and unseen organisms  that live in the soil. We do not use any chemical fertilizers or industrially manufactured soil amendments. The soil is “opened” about 16” below the surface using a deep fork, which breaks the hardpan. We then add a generous amount of compost which is worked into the top 4” of soil with a garden rake.  The nutrients in the compost travel down in the soil with the roots as the plant grows. For winter crops, the seeds are planted in a 2 inch layer of compost that blankets the soil.
